East Los Angeles College - Classroom Building Monterey Park, CA
This new Classroom Building addresses the physical, functional, and accessibility needs of a state-of-the-art classroom facility while complementing the existing campus buildings and outdoor spaces. The result is a cohesive design that blends in with the College’s American Modern Collegiate-style campus and provides students, faculty, and staff with a pleasant outdoor plaza.
The new facility accommodates the social science; child, family and education; psychology; business administration; and philosophy departments. The classrooms are located on the first and second floors, while administrative functions and faculty offices are located on the third floor.
Vertically-expressed, open stair elements protrude into the Plaza, enlivening the building with color and movement as students ascend and descend via the open balcony entries on every floor. A large canopy over the entrance provides students with a weather-protected gathering place in front of the building, as well as an open-air balcony with plaza views above the entrance.
