DLR Group WWCOT provided design services for the construction of a 4,000 square-foot expansion and 4,860 square-foot remodel to accommodate: enhancement of the main entrance, media/training area, new enclosed office spaces, new open office space, conference rooms, computer area, break area, storage area, men’s and women’s locker and shower/bathroom areas, HVAC system upgrade, and conversion of existing landscaping to low water usage vegetation and xeriscape.

DLR Group WWCOT’s master plan set forth site and design strategies on the existing campus that would foster a place of pride, create a sense of arrival, and reinforce the academy’s mission.
Site strategies included:
- Locating the parking adjacent to facility;
- Shielding the building and occupants from sun and wind;
- Locating the building adjacent to the firing ranges but mitigating the noise factor;
- Enhancing campus way-finding with a main entrance and secondary access for each division; and
- Maximizing distance from the nearby penitentiary and sewage systems.
Design strategies included:
- Dynamic placement of buildings and spaces that reflect the function and culture of the academy;
- Well-crafted construction of sturdy materials like metal siding, concrete, masonry, screen walls;
- Intuitive wayfinding and signage that direct candidates and officers to their destinations;
- Inward-looking and protected exterior spaces immediately adjacent to interior spaces that provide intensive training outside of classrooms; and
- Layered construction that enhances acoustical performance.
